Tips for flying a kite in Kessingland

Book-a-Holiday-in-Suffolk

There is something relaxing about flying a kite by the beach. However there are a few tips to help ensure that your kite actually does fly!

Type of kite

The type of kite you use will depend on conditions- a diamond or dragon shaped kite is best suited to light winds (6-15mph) while in heavier winds (8-25mph) it is best to use box kites or parafoils. A flag or windsock is the best way to test conditions. It is strongly recommended you avoid going out when it is very windy and definitely not when it is raining or thundery (wet kite string can attract the electricity in lightning storms!)

There is a kite shop on Kessingland beach and it is worth going in there to ask their advice on the best type of kites they have available (as stated above this will depend on the amount of wind and the weather conditions on you visit!)

Choose the right location

The big advantage of flying a kite by the beach is that there is less danger of your kite being caught on power lines, being stuck in trees and so forth. Ideally you want to get out somewhere with a lot of space, preferably away from the crowds-in Kessingland the beach is popular with kite surfers due to the fact there is enough room for it, however it is still worth checking your path before you start flying so you don’t get tangled up!

Bring a friend

It is easier to get the kite moving with two people doing the work!

How to make it fly

Make sure the wind is not behind the kite as this will make it fall. Unwind the string (around 60 feet) checking that there is nothing blocking your path (ideally you should have someone holding the kite at the same time, signalling them to release it once you are ready). The kite should go in a straight line, although it is important to check the wind and adjust yourself while flying the kite as much as possible. If at any time you need to lower the kite all you need to do is pull in the string.

Releasing the string will make the kite go higher- however be careful with the end of the string because if it comes loose you will lose it!

Once you become confident with flying you can then see how long you can keep it in the air, how fast you can fly it and even tricks such as loops.

In short with these tips and a bit of practise you should have a lot of fun flying your kite!
